Another Great Week at Highland!!

We have had a great week in Social Studies!!! We finished collaging our journals and I will be taking them home this weekend to laminate. All students did an outstanding job personalizing their S.S. journal. During all the collaging we also studied about American people and our culture as well as our national motto "E Pluribus Unum". 5th graders think Latin sounds pretty weird but we learned why this was a good motto over 200 years ago and still is a good motto for us today. Ask your child if they remeber what is means and why it is a good motto.
On Friday we celebrated Constitution Day by reading an article titled "3 Supreme Court Cases Every Kid Should Know" The kids loved hearing how these cases changed our laws in education. The three we read about were: Brown V. Board of Education (1954), Tinker V. Des Moines Independent School District (1969), and Hazelwood School District V. Kuhlmeier(1988). In all of these cases our Supreme Court had to interpret the laws we follow in our Constiutution and made a decision based on what the Constitution says. If you are unfamiliar with these cases google them, it's worth the read or ask your 5th grade student what they were about.
Next week we will continue in our overview unit as we learn about our Government, Economy and Regions of the U.S. We will also watch our first episode of NewsQuiz which is a 15 minute television program sponsored by KET that airs weekly. The students listen to the news and then are quizzed over what they learned. It is a lot of fun and it keeps us informed about what is going on around the state and the world!!!
